    Academic Year 2025/2026

    Year 1 explore materials

The children in Year 1 have been exploring materials and their properties. Today, they completed an investigation to find which material would make the best umbrella. The children had to decide whether the materials were waterproof or not waterproof and then chose which would make the best and worst umbrella. Photos of our experiments are in the photo album.

    Year 1 jump into action!

In year 1 we have been focusing on our fundamental PE skills. This week we were practising jumping from 2 feet to 2 feet and from 2 feet to 1 foot. We know that if we bend our knees and swing our arms, we will be able to jump higher, further and stay balanced. Take a look in the album for more photos.

    Seatbelt Safety Workshop

This week in Year 1 we had visitor from Staffordshire County Council who talked to us about seat belt safety. We learned the importance of always wearing a seatbelt or else we will end up hurt like Humpty Dumpty.

We also learned that most of us should be using a car seat as we are under 135cm tall and less than 12 years old.

    Year 1 learn about TOYS!!

This week year 1 played with new toys. They found out that new toys are often made of plastic, are brightly coloured and have electricity to light them up or move. Year 1 had a great afternoon and didn't realise they were learning so much! There are more photos in our photo album.

Year 1 visit the Potteries Museum

The children in Year 1 visited the Potteries museum and art gallery. They were excellent at identifying what was old and what was new. They asked great questions and looked very carefully at the objects. What fantastic historians they are! We will add more photos in the photo album.

    Year 1 Art Week

Year 1 have been looking at different types of lines during art week. They used different materials in a variety of ways- thinking about control and pressure to create their miniature pieces of art. How talented they are! There are more pictures in the photo album.

Year 1 go back in time

Year 1 travelled back into the past in school. The teachers were very mean and shouted a lot! There were so many strange rules to follow, like standing up to answer a question and only writing with your right hand. The children did Maths, PE and English but were rather bored because they had to do a lot of copying the teacher. There are more pictures to view in our photo album

    Yr1 Visit to the library

Year 1 have been to visit the local library in Hanley, and some parents joined us too! It was lovely to see the children enjoying the books and using their imagination to create their own stories. Please get in touch if you need any support visiting the library.  There are more photos in our photo album.

    Harvest

The children learned that Christian’s celebrate Harvest. They celebrate by praying and singing and also by collecting food for those that are less fortunate.

We thought about what Christians might say to God.

    Human Bodies

Year 1 have been showing their previous learning on the human body by making bodies out of clay and describing to their teachers what the body parts do and which senses they match with. There are more photos in our album.

    Year 1 learn about technology

Year 1 have been learning what technology is and how it helps us. They were able to log on to the computers and are working on their mouse skills.

    Year 1 Music

Year 1 are very excited to be back singing and dancing with Mr Anderson.

    Academic Year 2024/2025

    Trip to Brampton Museum

The children in Year 1 enjoyed a fantastic trip to the Brampton Museum where they enjoyed a themed day helping William to look for his toy soldiers who were lost. They designed and built new toys for him in the “kitchen” before looking at a selection of old toys in the parlour with William’s sister Amelia. The children looked for teddies in the old town and dressed up in old clothes before finding the missing soldiers in the cellar! There are more photos in the album.

    Trip to the Park

On a blustery Autumnal day, Year 1 headed off to the park to look at what had happened to the trees! Some of the leaves were missing! We found red leaves, orange leaves, yellow leaves and green leaves. Some were big and some were small. We had great fun trying to find the BIGGEST leaf. More photos are in the photo album

    Art Week

During Art week, the children learned to draw in the style of Lowry. We learnt to look at what is in the background and foreground; the different dark and light tones in the picture and how to hold a pencil to achieve different shades of colour. We took inspiration from St Mark’s church… have a look at some of our final pieces!

    DT Week - Fruit Kebabs

For DT Week, Year 1 made fruit Kebabs. During the week, they tasted different fruits to see which ones they liked; investigated the class favourite fruit, which was watermelon and discussed how to be safe when using knives. We tried cutting, grating and peeling pieces of fruit.

After designing their kebab, they had to cut each piece of fruit and slide it onto the kebab stick. This was sometimes tricky because the fruit was very slippery! Finally, they got to taste and evaluate their products - they were extremely tasty, and the children would love to make them again! There are more photos in the photo album.
