Mathematics Intent Statement

At St Mark’s, we think that maths is important in everyday life and serves as a basis for understanding the world. We want to ignite a sense of curiosity of maths in our children and ensure that they enjoy the subject. Our goal in mathematics is for the children to become fluent in the key principles, to be able to reason mathematically and to solve problems by confidently applying their learning to a variety of circumstances.

We want our children to understand that mathematics is a part of everyday life, linking to many other subjects and that they may draw connections across different areas to improve their fluency. This is why we use a mastery approach to mathematical teaching and learning. The concept is introduced in the Foundation Stage and built upon through to Year 6. In our Nursery setting, we use Master the Curriculum as a stimulus for teaching and learning and from Reception to Year 6 mathematics is delivered using the Maths No problem scheme of work.
