Geography Intent Statement
At St. Mark’s CE Primary School, we believe that a high-quality geography education should inspire our children with a curiosity and fascination about the world they live in and equip them with the knowledge and skills to become future caretakers of our planet.
Our children work as Geographers developing knowledge and skills to answer and reflect upon key questions through each geographical aspect. Our geography curriculum is divided into four main areas:
- Locational knowledge
- Place knowledge
- Human and physical geography
- Skills and fieldwork
Throughout the primary geography curriculum, children will investigate a range of places to help to develop their knowledge and understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes. They will also develop a sense of who they are and where they belong through local area studies before looking at the wider are of Britain and other countries across the World.
Our main aim is to broaden the horizons of our children and develop their enquiry and communication skills.
Geography in our EYFS:
Our EYFS setting gives us the first opportunity to see how a child interacts with their environment and how the environment influences them. Our curriculum aims to guide children, to make sense of their physical world and their community by allowing them to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment. We believe that this is the first step of becoming a geographer.
It is important for children to be taught about the complexity of the world they live in. Geography is key to this as it ensures children have an understanding of the world around them, its environments, places near and far, and the processes that create and affect them.
Primary Geography and SEND:
All children will access a broad and balanced geography curriculum and will be taught in an inclusive learning environment through many multi-sensory approaches. Systematic and consistent planning enables children to review previous knowledge/skills and build upon this.
