Writing Intent Statement
Our writing curriculum aims to create well-rounded writers, that understand different text types, audiences and purposes. English lessons are taught through engaging texts and children are immersed in a writing sequence that supports planning, drafting, editing and publishing their work. Built within our curriculum, children gain a knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and punctuation skills progressively. We intend for our children to be able to write independently and apply their skills cross curricular.
We aim to develop children’s speaking, listening, reading and writing skills through the use of Pie Corbett’s ‘Talk for Writing’ model. Pupils are given opportunities to develop speaking and listening skills through role play, book talk, drama and conversation.
Throughout the Early Years setting, children are encouraged to mark make and explain what their marks represent. As they start to learn how to form letters, children begin to use recognisable letters when writing simple words.
The Read Write Inc Spelling programme is used from year 2 to 6 to teach spelling skills progressively following on from Read Write Inc phonics. Children use the sequence of lessons to develop their understanding of spelling patterns and have an understanding of where words originate from.

Young Writer’s Competition – St Mark’s are WINNERS
Children from Year 6 were offered the opportunity to take part in a ‘Mini-Saga Competition,’ requiring them to write a short story of no more than one hundred words. The competition was a national one, with winners having their stories published in a compendium of mini-sagas. We are proud to announce that four of our children won and look forward to having their work published in the coming months. Picture L-R Mason, Fatimah, Zainab, Ana-Maria.
Writing Displays
We are extremely proud of our writing at St Mark’s and love to show our pupils’ wonderful writing in the corridors. Below are examples of our wonderful writing displays from the autumn term 2023.
We are Authors
During World Book Day this year, St Mark’s were challenged with the task of creating a book around the theme of ‘aspirations.’ Each class, wrote their own text, drew illustrations as well as designing a front cover and writing a blurb for their book. We are very excited as these have now been turned into real books that we can share in our school library!
