Computing Intent Statement
Through computational thinking and creativity, we believe that a high-quality computer education can equip children and adults to comprehend and transform the world they live in, and we take care to ensure that our teaching is focused on the learners’ development, including using the technology available.
An early introduction to digital technology has been found to improve children’s vocabulary as well as social development and creativity, while a deeper understanding of computers may help learners become more prepared to tackle mathematics or science.
At St Mark’s CE Primary School, our progressive computer curriculum is intended to help students become happy, intelligent, and effective users of technology by providing them with the knowledge and skills they need to become “competent learners” from EYFS to Year 6.
Children are encouraged to build a good understanding of computers and how computer systems work, together with the development of coding systems and debugging, where they gain confidence and take enjoyment from lessons. Online safety is a fundamental component within the computing curriculum. Children are encouraged to be open and honest about the challenges they may face online and through effective teaching and learning, they understand how to be more responsible online users.
“Everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer… because it teaches us how to think.”
Steve Jobs
